AAA LCM Champs - Day 1 Recap

Swim BC swimmers lit up the Canada Games Pool in Kamloops on Thursday night to kick off the 2017 SwimBC LCM AAA Championships. Even with battling 40ºC weather, Swim BC swimmers still had some amazing races.

Yutong Wu (HYACK) was the sole record breaker on Thursday night, with records in the Boys 11 and under 200m FL and 100m BK. He slipped under his HYACK predecessor Andrew Cho’s Boy’s 11-12 200m FL record in a 2:19.89, breaking the record by 0.01 seconds. The record has stood since 1991. Wu then came back again to break the 11-12 100m BK record set by Tai Long Singh in 2012. This time, he broke the record by 0.06 seconds. Several other swimmers were very close to the record marks. It is worth noting that almost every relay was under a second off the provincial record!

Highlights from the evening include the Men’s 16-18 200m FL, Women’s 14-15 200m FL, Women’s 12-13 100m BK, Men’s 11 and under 400m FR, and Women’s 12-13 800m FR. The Men’s 16-18 200m FL saw a tight race between the podium finishers, as all three boys touched within 0.69 seconds of each other. Lucas Tyler (UVPCS) took gold in a 2:05.54, followed by Dmitriy Lim (SFA), and Colin Gilbert (KCS). The Women’s 14-15 200m FL was just as close, with Josie Field (LOSC) and Octavia Lau (HYACK) sliding under the 2:20 barrier with times of 2:19.63 and 2:19.86, respectively. Chantel Jeffrey (CSSSC) followed closely behind in a time of 2:20.49. The entire heat of the Women’s 12-13 100m BK was very close. Ashley McMillan (KISU) and Camryn Stannard (UVPCS) finished first and second within 0.02 seconds of each other, in 1:08.35 and 1:08.37, respectively. They were followed closely by third place finisher Kara Beauregard (CRKW) in 1:09.24. There was also a close race for fourth to sixth place, with all three girls finishing within 0.75 seconds of each other. The 11 and Under Boy’s 400m FR had a similar race, with Hiro Hiruki (VPSC) and Niall Johnson (SPART) touching within 0.19 seconds of each other. There was also a tight race for the final podium spot, which was nabbed by Parker Cameron (KCS). Third to fifth place finishers were within 0.56 seconds of each other.
