PSW Wins Team Title at 2018 Winter Tier 1 Champs

While not as close a race as we had the previous weekend at the 2018 Tier 2 Winter Championships, it was still an exciting weekend of racing in Penticton.  Pacific Sea Wolves, based out of South Surrey, emerged as the overall team champions, with a comfortable margin of victory over second-place Hyack Swim Club of New Westminster.

Events on the final day of the meet included the 200m BR, 100m FL, 400m IM, 100m BK, 200m FR, and 200m Medley Relay.

Highlights from the day include the Girls 11-12 200m BR, Boys 11 and under 100m FL, Girls 10 and under 400m IM, and Boys 12-13 100m BK. The Girls 11-12 200m BR saw the top 20 girls all go best times. The largest drop in time went to 24th place finisher Gabrielle Knox (WLBF) who dropped 22.89 seconds from her entry time! The race for the medals was also very close, with the top five girls all finishing within a second of each other. Sidney Clement (HST) won in a 2:53.76. Isabella Villasenor (RAPID) claimed the silver with a time of 2:54.43, just out-touching Gracie Maryschak (LOSC) who finished in a 2:54.47. The Boys 11 and under 100m FL had a tight race between first and second place finishers Justin Jung (HYACK) and Matthew Wang (PSW). Jung hit the wall in a 1:10.91, followed closely by Wang in a 1:11.29. David Maibaum (RAPID) slid into third place with a 1:12.03 to round out the podium. The Girls 10 and under 400m IM showcased a tight race for the gold medal. Chloe Vertue (PGB) and Kelly Qi (PSW) battled it out on the final 100m. Both Vertue and Qi dropped 12 seconds off their entry times to touch in 5:48.29 and 5:48.46, respectively. Ridley Jenkins (CDSC) dropped 20.19 seconds to touch third in a 6:15.25. The top three finishers in the Boys 12-13 100m BK put up a tough race to vie for medal positions. Lochlan Rogers (RAC) hit the wall just 0.05 seconds ahead of Pierson Piche (KWIC) to touch in a 1:05.40 to Piche’s 1:05.45.
