2018 Tier II Age Group Championships - Day 2 Recap

Swim BC swimmers continued to shine at the 2018 Tier II Age Group Championships in Kamloops on day 2. Events for the day included the 100m FR, 200m BR, 100m FL, 400m FR, and the Mixed 200m Medley Relay. 


Madisen Jacques (HYACK) broke the Girl’s 11-12 100m FL provincial record set just last year in a time of 1:03.67. Jacques also slipped under the national mark set back in 2012 by 0.01 seconds. Her fellow HYACK compatriot Peter Huang (HYACK) followed suit, continuing his record breaking swims from Friday over to the 100m FL. He broke the both the provincial record and national record for the 11-12 boy’s 100m FL in heats by over a second with a 1:01.19. Huang dropped the marks down even further with a 1:00.66 in the finals. This is Huang’s second provincial and national record from the meet, after he broke the 200m FL record on Friday. 


Other highlights from the evening include the Boy’s 16-18 100m FR, Girl’s 15-18 200m BR, Girl’s 14 and under 100m FL, and the Boy’s 400m FR. The Boy’s 16-18 100m FR showcased a close battle for the medal positions. Justice Migneault (SKSC) came out on top in a time of 52.28, over a second ahead of the field. The race for second, third, and fourth was much closer as all three boys touched the wall within 0.31 seconds of each other. Laurenz Weber (KISU) followed Migneault into second place in a time of 53.49. Ethan Skofteby (CSSSC) out touched Justin Fotherby (KISU) by 0.01 seconds to claim bronze. The Girl’s 15-18 200m BR was a tight race between the Bailey Herbert (LOSC) and Ellie Maradyn (VPSC) on the last 50m. Maradyn (VPSC) posting a 37.88 on the final 50m, but her strong back end effort wasn’t quite enough to catch Herbert who touched in a 2:30.54. Maradyn followed in a 2:30.77. Bronze went to Axana Merckx (KWIC), who finished in a 2:35.54. The Girl’s 14 and under 100m FL saw Jacques take the gold, provincial record for 11-12 girls and the national record for 11-12 girls. Jacques touched just ahead of Isabella Brunoro (SFA), who finished in a 1:04.02. Lily Douglas (RAPID) captured the bronze medal in a 1:04.77. The Boy’s 400m FR had a tight race between the fifth to seventh place finishers. Mackenzie Lewington (PGB) came out ahead in a 4:17.44 to touch fifth, followed by Yutong Wu with a 4:17.47 for sixth, and Jakob Brager (RAC) in 4:17.69 for seventh. Calvin Slinn (WDSC) won the even in a 4:05.47, dropping 7 seconds from his prelims time.
