MELBOURNE, Australia (January, 15, 2010) – Olympic and world championship medallist Ryan Cochrane of Victoria is off to a great start in 2010 winning the gold medal in the men’s 400-metre freestyle on Friday at the Victoria State swimming championships.
Cochrane took a close race in three minutes and 53.23 seconds edging Patrick Murphy of Australia in second at 3:53.29. Murphy held a slight lead early on and was overtaken by Cochrane just past the halfway point.
Canadian swimmers added three more medals.
Stefan Hirniak of Victoria snared a silver medal in the men’s 200 butterfly clocking 2:02.06 just over a half second from the winning time posted by Lachlan Staples of Australia.
Katy Murdoch of Calgary took the bronze in the women’s 200 backstroke in 2:19.60 as the top four swimmers all finished within less than a second from each other. Hanna Kubas of Calgary was eighth.
In the women’s 800 freestyle, Kevyn Peterson of Calgary was also third in 8:57.92 with Breanna Hendricks of Calgary in fifth.
Erica Morningstar of Calgary was seventh in the women’s 100 freestyle.
