BC Swimmers Recipients of Victor Davis Bursaries

TORONTO (November 26, 2010) – Of the six young, aspiring swimmers who were named as recipients of the prestigious Victor Davis bursary, half of them were SwimBC members.   Presented at the Canada Cup of Swimming in Toronto on Friday night, the bursary is presented each year to up-and-coming swimmers to help support their Olympic dreams.

Since it's inception, the Victor Davis Memorial Fund has awarded 95 athletes with $1500 bursaries to aid in their training costs. Thirteen of these athletes were on the 2008 Olympic Team in Beijing, including Olympic bronze medalist Ryan Cochrane.

Mariya Chekanovych of Simon Fraser Aquatics, coached by Dmitriy Kononenko; Samantha Corea of the Vancouver Pacific Swim Club, coached by Tyler Lewall; Karyn Jewell of the Club de Natation Phenix de Gatineau, coached by Michel Berube;  Richard Funk of the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club, coached by Steve Price; Brayden Salmon of the London Aquatic Club, coached by Andrew Craven; and Keegan Zanatta of Island Swimming, coached by Aaron Dahl, were presented with the Victor Davis Bursary.

Each year awards are attributed from the Fund to promising, high performance Canadian swimmers to assist them to continue their training, education, and pursuit of medals at the international level.
