Komarnycky, Cochrane Earn Berths on PanPac Team

The evening started out very promising for BC swimmers, as Kelly Aspinall (UBCD) claimed his first National Championship, winning the men's 50 Fly in just the second event of the meet.  However, with PanPac Team selection being based off of only Olympic events (i.e., stroke 50s and men's 800/women's 1500 don't qualify), the first BC swimmer to make the team would come later in the evening.

As it turned out, much later.  But when they did, they did in a big way.

Through the other events in the finals session on Day 1 of the meet, a number of BC swimmers came tantalizingly close.  Automatic selection would go to event winners, with second-place finishers guaranteed a spot only if their times met the very fast FINA "A" standard (see list below).

In the men's 200 Free, Brian Johns (UBCD) finished a close second, and while he was out-swum through most of the race by event winner, Colin Russell, his superb underwater work off the turns kept him in contention right until the end.  His time of 1:48.91 just narrowly missed that FINA "A" cut of 1:48.72 by less than 2/10th second.

Then in the men's 100 back, Jake Tapp (LOSC) finished second as well, just 4/10th away from that FINA standard.  In the women's 200 fly, Tanya Hunks (UBCD) gave it a game effort, but couldn't match Audrey Lacroix, who won; and then in the men's 200 fly, Stefan Hirniak (IS) lead for 195 of the 200m, as Zack Chetrat just barely out-touched him at the wall.

In the final two events of the evening, though, BC swimmers shone, as Alexa Komarnycky (IS) took control of the women's 800m free right from the start, winning by a clear 10 seconds over second-place Savannah King (UBCD).  Alexa's teammate, Ryan Cochrane, was even more dominant in his 1500m race, putting 25m on the rest of the field in the first third of the race, then continuing to power away, eventually winning in 14:56.83, which is the fastest time in the world so far this year.

PanPac Trials continues through Saturday afternoon (BC time) with CBC broadcasting Saturdays finals session live (2:00-3:00pm here on the West Coast).  Prelims run each morning starting at 7:00am PDT, with finals starting at 3:00pm PDT.
