Victoria to Host TriNations Cup - Aug.5-6, 2010

On August 5-6, 2010, just a few days following the completing of Summer Nationals in at Saanich Commonwealth Place in Victoria, BC, that venue will play host to the Tri-Nations Cup - a meet featuring the top young swimmers from Canada, Australia and France.

“These athletes are considered some of the best prospects for future Olympic teams,” said Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and National Coach for Swimming Canada.  “We started this type of competition in 2008 against France and Great-Britain and have seen some great results from swimmers who have since graduated to the Senior A National Team.”

Forty Canadian swimmers will be selected a week prior to the event from Summer Nationals (July 28-31).

“Swimming Canada’s goal with hosting international level competitions is to give an opportunity to young athletes who are on the cusp of making the Olympic team to competed at a high level and get that international experience. This is our way of continuously preparing our future 2012-16 Olympic hopefuls,” added Lafontaine.

“We see great value in having our top junior athletes compete against the Canadians and Australians,” said Pierre Andraca, of the French Swimming Federation. “We have lots to learn from this type of competition and this will help us prepare for future international events.

The competition format will feature a 50 m Olympic event program. Each event will see two athletes per country racing in a shoot out type of event. A points system will be put in place to determine which country takes away the 2010 Tri-Nations cup.

As a warm-up to the Tri-Nations Cup, both the French and Australian delegation will participate at the 2010 Swimming Canada Summer Nationals in Victoria from July 28th to 31st.
