Canadian Swimmers Vying for Open Water Spots

OTTAWA – Eighteen swimmers get set to compete at the World Open Water Team trials this weekend in Long Beach, CA.  The trials, held simultaneously with the USA Swimming trials, will be used to select the top male and female for the 5 and 10km marathon events to be held on June 4th and 6th respectively. 

“This will be an exciting summer for Open Water swimming in Canada,” said Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and National Coach for Swimming Canada.  “With the World Open Water Championships hosted in our backyard and a new National circuit starting this summer, our swimmers will have great opportunities to showcase and develop the sport as we lead into the 2012 Olympics.”

With the inception of the 10km swimming marathon event at the Olympics in Beijing, the event has grown in popularity around the world.  Lafontaine says that many top pool distance swimmers are now crossing over to this event.

The Canadian Open water worlds team will comprise of 8 swimmers (4 women, 4 men).

 

Roberval will be hosting the FINA World Open Water Championships and the FINA 10km World Cup from July 17th to 23rd.
