Roberval Ready to Host the World for FINA World Open Water Champs

ROBERVAL - After Honolulu (USA, 2000), Sharm-el-Sheikh (Egypt, 2002), Dubaï (United Arab Emirates, 2004), Naples (Italy, 2006) and Seville (Spain, 2008), now ROBERVAL has the honour of hosting, for the first time in Canada, the FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships.

Dubbed ROBERVAL 2010, this great world open water swimming meet – second only to the Olympic Games – is slated for July 15-23, 2010, just ahead of the Traversée internationale du lac St-Jean swimming festival, which will run from July 24 to August 1. The FINA event is organised by the experienced Traversée internationale du lac St-Jean inc. team, in partnership with Swimming Canada.

The athletes will compete for the men’s and women’s world championships over distances of 5 km, 10 km, and 25 km. Some 120athletes from 30 countries have already confirmed their participation at this international meet. With FINA delegates, officials and other guests included, 43 countries will be represented in Roberval, July 15-23.

“Among the registered athletes to watch, le’s note the 2008 Beijing Olympic Medalists : Larisa Ilchenko  from Russia (Gold), Great Britain’s Keri-Anne Payne and Cassandra Patten (Silver and Bronze) and Thomas Lurz from Germany (Bronze). We will also watch : Melissa Gorman of Australia (Gold in the 5 km- Rome 2009 World Championships), USA’s Francis Crippen (Bronze-10 km, Rome 2009), and South Africa’s Chad Ho (Bronze-5 km, Rome 2009). Several top Canadian swimmers will also be taking part, including Quebec City’s Simon Tobin”,said Roberval 2010 OC Coordinator, Benoit Amyot.

Roberval 2010 comprises six races over four days, as follows: 

  • Saturday, July 17:     Women’s 10 km (11:30)
  • Sunday, July 18:        Men’s 10 km (11:30)
  • Tuesday, July 20:        Women’s 5 km (10:30)         Men’s 5 km (14:00)
  • Thursday, July 22:       Men’s 25 km (9:00)       Women’s 25 km (9: 15)
