Open Water Swimmers set to race for Ticket to Shanghai

Swimming Canada’s Open Water World Championships Trials to take place this weekend

Fort Myers Beach, Florida (June 9, 2011) – Canadian Open water swimmers will travel south this weekend to race for their ticket to the 2011 FINA World Aquatic Championships taking place in Shanghai, China this July.  The Canadian Open Water World Trials will be held in Fort Myers on Saturday June 11th, 2011.
The 10km race, a new Olympic event since the Beijing Games, will start at 7:53 am Local time and will comprise of a 5 x 2 kilometer loop in the Gulf of Mexico parallel to the shore. 
Several swimmers set to swim the trials already have international Open water swimming experience.
Victoria’s Richard Weinberger (UVPCS) was a bronze medalist at the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships in the men’s 10km, Simon Tobin of Quebec City has represented Canada at the 2009 World Championships and FINA World Open Water Championships last summer in Roberval. 
Xavier Desharnais of Lasalle, was also part of Canada’s Open Worlds Team in Roberval. Toronto native, Aimeson King (IS), now living in Victoria, made his international debut last summer with the Pan Pacs team.
On the women’s side, Zsofi Balazs of Toronto is a name that is recognized around the globe competing most recently as part of the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships team. Nadine Williams, member of the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships team, and Caitlin Nolan competed for the red and white at the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome.  
Joanie Guillemet-Simard was treated like a rockstar when she competed in her hometown of Roberval, QC during the 6th FINA Open Water World Championships.
Swimmers who finish top 2 in both men and women’s race will earn their ticket to represent Canada at the FINA worlds this summer.
Canada’s pool swimmers were selected last April in Victoria, BC.
