The first day of competition at the 2012 Speedo Western Canadian Championships in Winnipeg saw BC swimmers medal in all four of the distance events, which were the only individual medal events on the opening day.
Two of the medalists hail from the Prince George Barracudas, as Danica Ludlow and Sterling King each picked up medals in their respective age brackets at the meet. Ludlow went under 17:00 in the 1500 for the first time, going 16:57.91. King moved a lot closer to the 8:00 barrier in the 800, dropping his time from 8:22 to 8:09.66. At this meet, Girls compete as 15&U or Open, while the two age divisions for the boys are 16&U and Open.
In the Open category, Sherry Liu (HYACK) picked up a bronze medal in the women's 1500, while Eric Hedlin (IS) and Keegan Zanatta (IS) picked up silver and bronze, respectively, with Hedlin just half a second away from the gold.
A number of swimmers positioned themselves well in the prelims of the stroke 50s, including James Dergousoff (CHENA), and Julian Monks (SFU), who are all seeded first going into the finals in 50 Breastroke.
