Canada's premiere Open Water swimmer, Richard Weinberger (UVPCS) earned his way onto the Canadian Olympic team for the 2012 Games in London this summer, finishing second to 2008 Beijing 1500m Free Gold Medalist, Ous Mellouli, at the 10K Open Water Olympic qualifying race on Sunday in Setubal, Portugal.
After going through the first lap of the six-lap race right near the back of the pack, Weinberger started picking up places as the race progressed, moving from 49th to 23rd to 15th, then right with the leaders at 8th place heading into the final two laps.
While Mellouli posted the fastest times on each of the final two laps (16:11 and 14:59), Weinberger had the second fastest on each of those two laps at 16:15 and 15:04. With open water races often being being decided by mere tenths of a second separating the top 5-10 swimmers, Mellouli margin of victory was impressive, posting a final time of 1:45:18.5, with Weinberger at 1:45:30.2. Weinberger also had a sizeable gap over the third-place finisher, who was almost a full four seconds back.
