Results at 2012 SwimBC Open Water Championships

While the storm that rolled through the Fraser Valley in the wee hours of Monday morning caused us a little bit of concern, that abated once we were at the race site of the 2012 SwimBC Open Water Championships at Albert Dyck Park in Abbotsford. The weather was spectacular, with air temps in the 22C range at race start, and the water temperature was pretty much the same - simply ideal conditions for an open water race.

The first race to come across the finish line was the 12-13 age group who were racing 2km.  Imani Theodore (CDSC) won the girls side of the race, finishing first overall, while her teammate, Joel Lotzkar was not far behind to win the boys race for that age group. Silver and bronze medalists for the girls were Erin Lawrence (IS) and Haley Bennett (RAC), respectively, while Ethan Phillips (KCS) and Sam Ogden (IS) took the second and third spots on the boys side.

In the 3km 14-15yr. girls race, Heidi Ullrich (UVPCS) finished first, followed by Reilly Rowland (KISU) and Richelle Bruychere (RAC), while Josh Zakala (KAJ) won the boys race, followed by Finn Page (IS) and Carel Ackerman (KCS).

The 16&O/Open (minimum age 14yrs. old) swimmers did five laps of the 1km course, and Jessie Ogden (IS) took the win with Victoria Mock (UVPCS) and Julia Veidt (KISU) finishing not too far behind her.  Zac Parkes (UVPCS), as he did last year, won the boys 5km race handily, while Sam Wohlgemuth (IS) and Nick Sunderland-Baker (IS) claimed second and third.

SwimBC would like to thank all the volunteers who came to assist us in putting on the race, as well as the members of the Vancouver Lifeguard Association who showed up to ensure that the swimmers would be well taken care of in the event of any issues.

We enjoyed the event so much that we fully intend to do the race at the same spot on the same Monday after long course AAA Championships next July.  AAA Champs will be hosted by VPSC at UBC on July 4-7, after which we encourage all those interested to once again come out to Albert Dyck Lake to take part in our 2013 SwimBC Open Water Championships on the morning of Monday, July 8.
