It is with great sadness that SwimBC informs its membership of the passing of one of BC's, and indeed Canada’s, most devoted builders of swimming.
Known simply as “Flip,” Guiseppe Filippelli served for over 25 years as a swimming official representing Canada at Olympic Games competitions, where he was everything from deck official to competition referee. He passed away on August 1, 2012.
“Flip was a true ambassador for the sport of swimming,” said David de Vlieger, President of Swimming Canada. “He worked tirelessly to support swimming in Canada and his efforts will always be appreciated.”
“Flip was a true inspiration to us all,” said Pierre Lafontaine, CEO of Swimming Canada. “Flip was a champion builder of our community and will be truly missed. We wish our condolences to his family and many close friends.”
As a member of the Amateur Swimming Union of the Americas Board for the past 30 years and as 12-year member of FINA’s Technical Swimming Committee, Flip has always had a helping hand in organizing swimming in the Americas and around the world.
Flip served in leadership positions at Lakeside and Pointe Claire Swim Clubs (1969-1970), Canadian Dolphin Swim Club (Director 1971-1991), 1973 Canada Games Swimming Venue Manager, CASA British Columbia Section Officer (since 1977) and has participated in numerous Swimming Canada committees over the years.
During his involvement in swimming, Flip received several awards including Swimming Canada Administrator of the Year, Air Canada Executive of the Year (1990), Swimming Canada’s Presidents Award (1997), FINA Silver Pin and the Olympic Ring—only the second volunteer to gain this honor, and was inducted into the Swimming Canada Circle of Excellence.
He is also a member of the BC Swimming Hall of Fame, as well as being honoured as the SportBC Official of the Year in 1993.
Flip will be mostly remembered by his kind humour and smile around our pool decks.
