The 2014 SwimBC Open Water Championships took place on Monday morning at Thetis Lake, and after four long, loud, and hot days at Saanich Commonwealth Place, the 76 swimmers and their supporters who showed up at Thetis Lake, greatly appreciated the perfect weather and setting for an open-water race.
Tyee Aquatic Club played host to this event, and had an excellent course laid out, with a short 500m loop near the beach area and a longer 1500m loop that went the start area near the beach out and then followed near the perimter of the lake. In addition to the tranquil park setting, the weather was ideal as well, with both air and water temperatures right around 21C, and overcast skies keeping glare in the water to a minimum.
Three separate distances were contested, with 11-12yr. old swimmers going 1km, 13-14yr. olds swimming 2km, and 15&Over swimmers going a full 5km.
Josh Zakala (KAJ) and Heidi Ullrich (IS) were the first across the line in the 5km races for guys and girls, respectively. Tops for 13-14 were Austin Phillips (KCS) and Erin Lawrance (TYEE), while Michael Schmidt (UVPCS) and Acacia Benn (KISU) were tops for the 11-12yr. olds.
