EDMONTON – Emily Overholt (WVOSC/HPC - Vancouver) of West Vancouver, Rebecca Smith of Red Deer, Alta., and Markus Thormeyer (WDSC) of Delta, B.C., each completed the Speedo Western Canadian Open swimming competition with five gold medals apiece.
Overholt, a member of Canada’s Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific teams in 2014, collected two victories in the women’s 16 and over age group placing first in the 200-m freestyle and 200-m individual medley.
Smith notched her fifth gold in the 15 and under category winning the 50-m freestyle. Sarah Darcel (ISC) of Victoria won the other two individual events – the 200-m butterfly and 200-m individual medley to finish the four-day meet with three gold.
Thormeyer repeated his production from last year but this time in the men’s 17 and over group. His fifth win was in the 200-m individual medley. Josh Zakala (KAJ) of Kelowna, B.C., was the big star in the men’s 16 and under as he collected a fourth gold Sunday in the 200-m individual medley.
