2017 Westerns / Easterns - Day 2 Report

SwimBC athletes continued to play an out-sized role their events on the second day of both the 2017 Canadian Eastern Swimming Championships and Canadian Western Swimming Championships, already amassing a total of 30 medals between the two meets. 

Already, there are many multi medallists. At Westerns, Jessica Luo (UVPCS) picked up the silver in the Women’s 13-15 100m FR, following her silver medal performance in the 200m FR on Thursday. Meredith Levorson (VKSC) followed suit in the Women’s 16 and Over 100m FR, winning the gold medal to add to her first place swim the previous night in the 200m FR.

Avery Movold (PGB) collected the bronze medal in the 50m BK, adding to her two silvers (200m FR and 800m FR) and one gold (100m BK) from Thursday. Eloise Ladyman (KCS) touched first in the 50m BK to add to her silver medal finish in the 100m BK from the night before. Bailey Herbert (LOSC) had a big night, with a bronze in the Women’s 13-15 100m BR and a gold in the 400m IM.

On the boy’s side, Tyler Wall (KISU) touched first in the 100m FR to add to his 100m BK gold from the previous night. Michael Schmidt (UVPCS) gained another silver medal in the breaststroke, this time coming from the Men’s 14-16 100m BR. Jaren LeFranc (KISU) mirrored this with another gold medal finish in the Men’s 17 and Over 100m BR. LeFranc also won the 200m BR on Thursday. LeFranc was followed by Ruishen Yu (SKSC) and Jamie Demers (CHENA). Demers won the silver medal in the 200m BR the night before. Scott Pfeifer (SKSC) touched second in the Men’s 14-16 400m IM, followed by Myles Wheeler (SPART). Wheeler also picked up a bronze in the 200m BR on Thursday. 

At Easterns, Faith Knelson (ISC) won both the Women’s 13-15 100m FR and 100m BR, bringing her to a total of four medals so far in the competition. Her teammate Mackenzie Padington (ISC) followed suit with a first place finish Women’s 16 and Over 100m FR and second place finish in the 100m BR. This also brings her to a total of four medals so far.

Not to be outdone, Jade Hannah (ISC) picked up two medals with a silver in the Women’s 13 and Over 50m BK and a gold in the 50m FL. Hannah now sits at a total of three medals so far at 2017 Easterns.

Brodie Young (HYACK) touched first in the men’s 14-16 400m IM. Young later joined teammates Micah Lau, Marin Dimitrov, and Sehajvir Singh to win a silver medal in the men’s 14 and Over 800m FR relay. Singh came third in the Men’s 14-16 100m BK on Thursday. 

SwimBC teams continue to take up most of the top spots for team scores at Westerns. On the Women’s side, ISC is 5th, followed by PGB (6th), KCS (7th) and LOSC (9th). KISU leads the way for the men’s side in 3rd, followed by CHENA (4th), ISC (7th), KCS (8th) and SKSC (9th). For combined team scores, KISU (4th) has pulled ahead of ISC (5th). They are followed closely by KCS (7th), PSW (8th) and CHENA (9th). Over at Easterns, ISC continues to dominate the women’s standings, and they lead the women’s team points coming out of day two. HYACK follows in 4th. HYACK is also ranked 4th for men’s team points after Friday’s finals session. For combined team points, ISC is 3rd, followed closely by HYACK (4th).
