2017 Canadian Junior Swimming Championships Open Water Recap

The 2017 Canadian Junior Swimming Championships wrapped up on Monday with the open water events, held at Professor’s Lake in Brampton, Ontario. All swimmers swam 5km.

Four SwimBC swimmers competed in the open water events, and each of them gained a medal. First up was Molly Fogarty (CSSSC) in the girls 14-15 race. This was her first medal from the competition. Her teammate Chantel Jeffrey (CSSSC) took gold in the girls 16-17 event. Jeffrey earned the silver in the 800m freestyle in the pool this weekend. On the boys side, another CSSSC swimmer made waves. In the boys 14-16 5km, Ethan Skofteby (CSSSC) finished fifteen seconds back from first place. His swim earned him a bronze for his only medal from the weekend. Finally, Ethan Phillips (ISC) defended his title from the 5km race at last year’s 2016 Canadian Age Group Championships with a win in the boys 17-18 race. Phillips was eight seconds ahead of the silver medallist.

In overall team points, ISC pulled into 9th following the open water events to claim the top points scoring team from BC with 413 points. HYACK followed closely behind in 10th with 402.5 points for the second highest scoring SwimBC team. VPSC rounded out the top 3 SwimBC teams with a 13th place finish with 356 points.

Congratulations to all of the athletes who swam this weekend. Another thank you to the coaches, officials, volunteers, and sponsors who worked tirelessly to make the entire meet run smoothly. Best of luck to swimmers who have more competitions remaining in the season!
