The 2018 FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships got underway on Thursday, September 6, at the Israeli resort city of Eilat, on the coast of the Red Sea. Among the twelve competitors making up the Swimming Canada contingent were Raben Dommann (CHENA) and Octavia Lau (HYACK).
The Championships consist of three age groups, racing various distances, with 14-15yr. olds racing 5K, 16-17yr. olds racing 7.5km, and 18-19yr. olds racing 10K. Both Lau and Dommann, raced in their respective 7.5km race on Thursday, with Dommann having the best finish of any of the Canadians in either race in 13th place. Lau was the top Canadian in her race with a 29th place finish.
The top Canadian so far, with just the 10km races set to go on Friday was Alex Axon, who was fifth in the 14-15yr. boys 5K race. The Championships conclude on Saturday with boys and girls 4x1250m relays.
