External credits are available for swimmers registered with Swim BC who have met the following criteria:
Coach Level 1 UXSC (2 credits)
Requirements are:
- Students must complete 30 hours of practical coaching experience.
- Complete the NCCP Make Ethical Decisions training and online evaluation
- NCCP Community Sport Coach Trained status
- Additional 8 hours of multi-sport workshops/eModules (from the following list: Planning a Practice, Design a Sport Program, Teaching and Learning, Basic Mental Skills, Fundamental Movement Skills, Run, Jump, Throw, Wheel, Aboriginal Coach Modules, Coaching Athletes with a Disability, Making Headway, Nutrition, Safe Sport, Positive Sport Environment, Mental Health, and/or Coaching Initiation)
Coach Level 2 UXSC (2 credits)
Requirements are:
- Students must complete 30 hours of practical coaching experience.
- NCCP Fundamentals Coach Trained status
- Complete the NCCP Make Ethical Decisions training and online evaluation
PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE
Students must complete a minimum of 30 hours of monitored coaching experience.
Level 1 students must have their experience monitored and reviewed by a Fundamentals Coach Trained or higher. This coach must be trained in the sport in which a student is being evaluated.
Level 2 students must have their experience monitored by a Fundamentals Coach Certified or higher. This coach must be certified in the sport in which a student is being evaluated.
Practical coaching experience must be in the same sport as the trained or certified accreditations. Student coaches should keep a log of their coaching hours that includes:
- Practical coaching hours
- Teams or athletes coached
- Competition level of participation (e.g., club, regional, provincial)
The evaluating coach must provide the student coach with a verification letter that includes:
- Student name
- Number of practical coaching hours
- Team or athletes coached
- Competition level of participation
- Authorizing coach name and NCCP CC number
- Date of completion
GETTING CREDIT
Student coaches seeking to earn credit must provide proof of completion for all required program components to viaSport at coaches@viasport.ca. ViaSport will send a verification letter to the student if they have fulfilled all the requirements.
Required documentation for Level 1 includes:
- NCCP training and certifications (Locker transcript)
- Practical coach experience verification letter
Required documentation for Level 2 includes:
- NCCP training and certifications (Locker transcript)
- Practical coach experience verification letter
Regardless of when the performance was achieved, the times will be compared against the current season’s time standards to make the determination of a swimmer’s eligibility for credit. The current BC time standards can be found here. The Swimming Canada Time standards can be found here.
To apply for credit, please fill out the application form. Swim BC will review the submission and email the applicant a letter that can be presented to their school counsellor.
