In Memory of Melvin “Mel” Nicholas Zajac
June 9, 2026

Swim BC joins the swimming community in mourning the passing of Mel Zajac Sr., whose generosity, leadership, and longstanding commitment to sport have left a lasting impact on swimming in British Columbia and across Canada.
Inducted into the BC Swimming Hall of Fame as a Builder in 2019, Mel Zajac Sr. was recognized for his philanthropic support of swimming in British Columbia and his dedication to the Canadian Dolphin Swim Club Program. His immense contributions to Canadian society were further recognized with two of the country’s highest honours: being named a Member of the Order of Canada (2007) and receiving the Order of British Columbia (2015).
Through the Mel Jr. & Marty Zajac Foundation, Mel Sr. helped create opportunities for countless athletes and families. His support helped strengthen swimming in British Columbia by bringing world-class competitions to Vancouver and creating opportunities for young athletes to pursue excellence in sport.
Reflecting on this monumental impact, Jeannie Lo, President of Swim BC, shared: “Swim BC is deeply saddened by the loss of Mel Zajac, Sr. We are grateful for the tremendous contribution of the Zajac family to swimming, both Mel Jr. and his accomplishments in the pool, and the legacy established by Mel Sr. and family in the creation of the Mel Zajac Jr. International Swim Meet, which goes from strength to strength each year. We are proud to honor Mel Zajac, Sr. and strive to carry on his legacy.”
Beyond the pool deck, his vision and generosity were instrumental in the creation and continued success of Zajac Ranch for Children, which has provided life-changing camp experiences for children and young adults living with serious medical conditions and disabilities.
Those who worked alongside him knew that his immense philanthropic achievements were driven by a remarkably warm and vibrant personal spirit. Chris Hindmarch-Watson, Executive Director of the CSCA, reflected on that personal connection: “I was lucky to have known Mel through my long-time involvement with the Mel Zajac Jr International Swim Meet and UBC Swimming. I truly mean that. I was lucky to have known him. For having been able to share brief periods of time with him. For sharing meals with him and hearing his stories and for being influenced by his infectious energy, generosity and presence.”
As the 61st Mel Zajac Jr. International Swim Meet concluded on June 7, 2026, we reflect on the remarkable legacy of a man whose generosity, vision, and dedication helped shape generations of swimmers and strengthened the swimming community throughout British Columbia.
Swim BC extends its deepest condolences to the Zajac family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by Mel Sr.’s kindness, leadership, and unwavering commitment to giving back.
