Swim BC Announces Open Water Championships Cancellation

With an abundance of caution, the Organizing Committee and Swim BC staff have decided to cancel the BC Open Water Championships. Originally scheduled for Friday, June 14th, the unseasonably cold spring has led to water temperatures falling below the thresholds set by Swimming Canada and World Aquatics rules.  The Competition Managers have been closely monitoring the temperature of the Sasamat Lake competition course. The temperature has consistently hovered between 15 to 16°C, which is below even the wetsuit threshold rules. Furthermore, the current weather forecast predicts overnight lows of 3°C and a high of 11°C on race day, with rain. These conditions have made it clear that canceling the event is the safest decision.  Swim BC prioritizes the well-being and safety of all participants. Although this cancellation is extremely inconvenient for participants, officials, and support personnel, we cannot ensure the safe delivery of the event under these conditions. We are deeply grateful for the efforts and leadership of the SFA organizing committee, particularly Paul and Miranda McNamara, and Open Water officiating expert Mike Stamhuis.  All entry fees will be refunded. We will contact all payees with refund information next week.

2024 Olympic and Paralympic Trials – Day 7

The 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Trials, Presented by Bell, at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre has concluded with outstanding performances across the 7-day competition. In the Para 50m Freestyle, Danielle Dorris broke her own S7 Canadian record with a time of 33.40, while Mary Jibb also set a new S9 national standard. However, it was Aurelie Rivard who scored the most Para points in the S10 category with her time of 27.99. Sebastian Massabie etched his name into the record books once again, setting a new S4 50 Freestyle Canadian record of 38.48 to claim victory. He had come agonizingly close to breaking the record in the preliminary heats earlier in the day, touching in 38.52 to just narrowly miss his previous best mark. Penny Oleksiak crushed her lifetime best to win the event in 25.06, edging out Taylor Ruck (25.08). Neither Oleksiak nor Ruck achieved the Olympic ‘A’ cut of 24.70 for individual qualification. Two Swim BC age group records were broken in the event, Leilani Fack (Langley Olympians) in the 15 – 17 age group and Kelly Choi (Kelowna AquaJets) in the 13 – 14 age group. Josh Liendo lowered his own Canadian record in the 100m Butterfly with a world-leading time of 50.06 in the final, dropping almost three-tenths from his preliminary swim of 50.33 earlier in the day. His new mark of 50.06 moves him up to #5 on the all-time world rankings. Ilya Kharun also qualified for the Olympics with his second-place 51.09, under his previous best. Sydney Pickrem stunned with a blistering 36.29 breaststroke leg in the 200m Individual Medley, but Summer McIntosh rallied on the freestyle leg to win in 2:07.06, narrowly missing her own Canadian record. Pickrem qualified for her third Olympics with a lifetime best of 2:07.68. Canada showcased depth with four women under the ‘A’ cut, though Mary-Sophie Harvey and Ashley McMillan finished outside the top two. In the Paralympic 200 Free events, Sebastian Massabie (Pacific Sea Wolves) continued his record-breaking run by setting a new S4 Canadian record of 3:07.00 in the 200m Freestyle preliminaries. Nicholas Bennett won the Para power point battle in the same event with 1:54.78 in the S14 category. Alisson Gobeil held off Jessica Tinney in the S5 200m Freestyle showdown. Eric Brown defended his national title in the 1500m Freestyle with a winning time of 15:23.87, quicker than last year but slower than the previous Olympic Trials. After being passed by Timothe Barbeau in the 800m earlier, Brown regained the lead before the 1150m mark, with Barbeau taking second in 15:26.58. Olivier Risk and Sebastian Paulins also finished in the top four with times under 15:30.
