On March 9th, 2023, Sport BC celebrated the 55th Annual Athlete of the Year Awards. We are proud to announce that Laon Kim of Hyack Swim Club received the High School Male Athlete of the Year award! This award recognizes a male athlete who was enrolled in a secondary school in the province of BC and demonstrated extraordinary athletic performance in either the 2021 or 2022 season. Congrats Laon on this incredible achievement!
We would also like to recognize Brent Hayden for his nomination for the Senior Male Athlete of the Year award and for sharing his experiences with Laon during the celebration.
Thank you for representing Swim BC and the BC swimming community!
Swim BC is embarking on a new strategic planning process intended to create a comprehensive “Swimming in BC” strategic plan. In our intent to grow as a modern and progressive sport organization, we have made an expressed commitment to use collaborative engagement processes to achieve our mission and vision in a manner that aligns with our values.
In December, we engaged a group of club head coaches, club administrators, and the staff and Board of Swim BC through the Sport Culture Index, an innovative survey that provided important information about our culture. We have used this information to inform the development of our upcoming strategic planning process. Our goal is to create a “Swimming in BC” strategic plan that will serve as a guidepost for all Swim BC members. Importantly, this plan will also provide a common vision, based on shared values to foster a greater sense of alignment as we continue to address common risks and shared opportunities. As a result, we have designed an inclusive approach that will provide several opportunities for our membership to meaningfully contribute through surveys, interviews, and consultations.
The information gathered through these engagement opportunities will guide the Board of Directors and staff in making informed decisions on the mission, vision, values, and strategic directions that will guide competitive swimming in the province from 2023-2028.
A Membership Survey will be launched by the end of February and Engagement Conversations will be held throughout April. The Board of Directors will meet in May to participate in a strategic planning session, and after approval, they anticipate presenting the plan to members at the BC Swimming Congress at the end of September. The Congress will also be an opportunity for clubs to participate in a session on creating a club plan that shares in the vision of “Swimming in BC”
Swim BC is committed to keeping our membership informed throughout the strategic planning process by utilizing Membership Bulletin updates and website posts. The Board has identified a Leadership Working Group to help guide the planning process and will provide regular updates to the Board. The Leadership Working Group is comprised of Jeannie Lo, President; John Lawrence, Board Member; Ken Radford, Executive Director and Tracy Gardner, Club Services Manager.
To support our strategic planning project, Swim BC has engaged the services of Sport Law, one of Canada’s leading sport management organizations. Cheryl Humphrey, a Sport Law consultant, and former Executive Director of Swim Alberta will be guiding our efforts.
For more information on the “Swimming in BC” strategic initiative, please reach out to Swim BC Executive Director, Ken Radford.
The Board of Directors of Swim BC is very excited to inform you of the launch of two significant projects. Reflective of our values and our commitment to membership engagement, the first project will focus on piloting the Sport Culture Index, a powerful and innovative way for us to measure our sport culture. The second project will be a comprehensive renewal of our strategic plan. We anticipate these initiatives will not only provide us with a clearer understanding of issues impacting our culture, but we expect they will provide us significant insight in defining a clear path toward the modernization of all member’s sporting experiences. Through these important projects, we will ensure that Swim BC continues to evolve as an organization driven by values. With your active engagement, we’re confident we’ll continue to develop and foster a safe and nurturing environment for all participants to thrive, regardless of their personal goals.
Swim BC is among the leading sport organizations that will be participating in the Sport Culture Index, a culture assessment being championed by Sport Law and powered by innerlogic. This assessment will help us address areas that need improvement and identify the ways we can leverage existing strengths. The first phase is focusing on a specific cohort of Swim BC participants who play a significant role in supporting Swim BC’s operations including the Swim BC Board and Operational Committee members; targeted Club’s coaches, presidents, and administrators; as well as Swim BC staff. The team at Sport Law will review the data and as we progress and make recommendations on how to broaden the scope of the Sport Culture Index to all Clubs. We are excited to share the findings with you as this project progresses.
The second project will see us embark on a detailed strategic planning process designed to support our commitment to engage our membership. We are delighted to be working with Cheryl Humphrey from Sport Law to guide our planning process, including integrating the culture review in a meaningful way. Cheryl knows the swimming world extremely well, having recently been the Executive Director of Swim Alberta and prior to that an official and swimming parent.
If you have any questions about these exciting initiatives and our efforts to re-imagine Swim BC, please feel free to touch bases with Executive Director, Ken Radford.
Introducing the new home of the BC Swimming Hall of Fame! A new website has been created for the BC Swimming Hall of Fame which showcases the best of BC Swimming and our important history. Along with our inductees, there are highlighted pieces of swimming history that we want to keep alive and share with the BC Swimming community. We encourage everyone to visit the BC Swimming Hall of Fame.
In addition, to the website, we have developed a video that showcases all our Hall of Fame inductees. If your club would like a copy of the Hall of Fame video, for display on your scoreboard or monitors in your facilities, please contact Tracy Gardner. (tracy.gardner@swimbc.ca).
