OFFICIALLY UNOFFICIAL RANKINGS (SPRING-SUMMER 2021)

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic and Provincial Health Order restrictions, Swim BC will be running a Spring – Summer edition of the Officially Unofficial Rankings. This popular initiative saw over 1,100 swimmers participate from 31 teams in our December – January edition of the program.   This initiative is an opportunity for all clubs in BC to share performances whether they are from a race rehearsal in workout, a get-out swim or one last rep in a descending set. (If a time comes when time trials or swim meets are permitted, they will also be accepted.)   With lessons learned, there are several modifications to this edition of the OU Rankings. The program is summarized below:  When:  April 26th through June 13, 2021   Where: Club training session (or if permitted – scheduled time trial or swim meet.)  Who:  All Swim BC Swimmers who are fully registered and in a Competitive Category  Events: All Olympic, Paralympic and World Championship events, Short Course Meters and Long Course Meters (Separate Rankings)  Age Groups: 10 & Under; 11 – 12; 13 – 14; 15 – 17; 18 & Over  Short Course OU Rankings (Link) | Long Course OU Rankings (Link)

Changes to the Olympic and Paralympic Swimming Trials

Due to the COVID-19 situation in Ontario and other provinces, Swimming Canada is changing the Olympic & Paralympic Swimming Trials, Presented by Bell. Swimming Canada’s primary selection event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic teams was scheduled to run May 24-28 at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre (“TPASC”). “In light of the state of emergency and stay-at-home order in Ontario, as well as travel restrictions in and out of other provinces, Swimming Canada’s board of directors, in consultation with management, has determined that the May dates for Trials are no longer viable,” said President Cheryl Gibson, who led an emergency board meeting to review the situation Monday evening. “We have therefore asked management to explore plans to hold the Trials in June.” “The Olympic Trials will now be held at TPASC June 19-23, replacing the previously scheduled Invitational Qualifier. Swimming Canada is also pursuing options for holding the Trials elsewhere in North America should running the event in Toronto not be viable based on factors at the time. The dates would remain the same in an alternate location. A decision of whether to move the event, if possible, will be made by the end of May or sooner,” said CEO Ahmed El-Awadi. More…

VIRTUAL WINTER PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS UPDATE

The results from the BC Virtual Provincial Championships have been updated to reflect a number of changes:
  • A number of results have been amended to correct inputting errors.
  • Relays have been removed from the scoring.
We are sorry for any inconvenience that these changes may have caused. Please find the updated Results and Team Scores on the Results page. After receiving feedback from a number of swim clubs on issues related to the inability to conduct fair and equitable relays under the current Provincial Health Order guidelines, the Swim BC Staff, in consultation with the Competition Development Committee, have decided to remove all relays from scoring at the Virtual Winter Provincial Championships. The results for the relay swims will be posted, not scored.

SWIM BC SUMMER DIVISIONAL MEETS AND PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

It’s my unfortunate task to inform our membership of the official cancellation of the BC Summer Divisional competitions and BC Championships.  While we held out an optimistic perspective that we might see a return to competition that would permit these meets to go forward, in the end there are no facilities that are willing to take any type of booking for these meets, and further, as we monitor the BC Ministry of Health response to the current COVID-19 status it is clear that we will be encumbered with Gatherings and Event restrictions well into the summer and beyond.  In place of these meets, Swim BC technical staff will work with the Competitions Committee to frame virtual competitions similar to those we’ve recently conducted.  Ken Radford  Executive Director
