2022 -2023 Season Golden Flipper Challenge

The Golden Flipper Challenge this season is regionally based, with each region working collaboratively to develop their event. All swims done at sanctioned events will be scored. There will be no need to submit anything for the challenge. The challenge is for Para, Open, and birth years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. The top eight swims will score for LCM and SCM and the rankings will be updated throughout the season with the winners being announced in September 2023. The challenges are:
  • Lower Mainland (Vancouver Coastal, Fraser River, Fraser Valley) vs Swim Alberta – 100 Breast
  • Vancouver Island Region vs Swim Manitoba / Swim Saskatchewan – 200 Breast
  • Thompson – Okanagan Region vs Swim Nova Scotia – 200 Fly
  • Kootenay Region vs Swim PEI – 400 Free
  • North East / North West Regions vs Swim New Brunswick – 100 Breast
The Para challenges will be the para distance of that stroke and will be ranked by Para points. Swim BC encourages clubs to work together to strategize on how to best develop thier event. This may include micro challenges, special sets, or contests. Good luck and have fun!
BC Swimming Congress

BC Swimming Congress

Planning is well underway for the annual BC Swimming Congress, held at the Westin Hotel in Whistler, Sept 30, Oct 1, and Oct 2.  Swim BC is planning an extensive offering for Club Delegates – the Club Development Seminars will feature topics to assist clubs in their growth, development and a better understanding of their critical role.  We’re also offering Club Delegates the opportunity to take in two sessions of the CSCA Coaches Conference with Guest Speaker Matt Young of FSQ sport. Matt will also be featured at a plenary breakfast session we’re encouraging all Club Delegates to attend. Given the current environment surrounding sport and sport administration in Canada, we’re very pleased to have Matt share his thoughts on assessing and improving the sport system.  We’re also pleased to offer the opportunity for Club Delegates to sit in on Swimming Canada’s Para-swimming staff presentation. They will be providing guidance on how to integrate para swimming into your club, something all BC clubs need to envision. For more information and a tentative schedule, click here. Club delegates are also reminded of the Swim BC AGM, to be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, Oct 1.  The direction and governance of Swim BC is dependent on your participation and your vote at the AGM. More information about the Annual General Meeting can be found here. The annual Team Aquatic Supplies Awards and Hall of Fame Banquet will be held Saturday evening. The Club Development Seminars will be hosted alongside the CSCA National Coaches Conference, coaches are able to register for the conference here. Safe Sport Policy Templates

Over the past two years, Swim BC has required clubs to provide basic submissions as part of the club registration process.  We’ve done this as an introductory “accountability system”, to help create an expectation that clubs will, at a minimum have:
  • Current and relevant constitution and bylaws
  • A complaints management policy and procedure
  • A code of conduct
  • A travel policy
We began this system given our increasing awareness that most of our member club’s governance (bylaws, policies, parliamentary process) was in poor shape.  As we collected and reviewed annual submissions, it was evident that most clubs have outdated policies, are written poorly, lack the appropriate presentation and generally were not in a format that is easily accessible by their membership. We acknowledge that Swim BC has not provided the understanding of the importance of quality policies, nor have we provided the resources to assist our member clubs in upgrading their governance. A few templates for clubs the past few years, but unfortunately, what we saw is clubs simply transcribed their name on the template for the purposes of submitting to Swim BC.  This is not why you adopt policies. Club Template Policies The following policy templates are now available in MS Word.docx format from Swim BC. For copyright protection reasons they will not be posted online.  To request the templates, please contact Sam Thoms:
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution Policy
  • Appeal Policy
  • Athlete Protection Policy
  • Code of Conduct and Ethics
  • Concussion Policy
  • Conflict of Interest Policy
  • Discipline and Complaints Policy
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policy
  • Event Discipline Policy
  • Financial Management Policy
  • Gender Identity Eligibility Guidelines
  • Privacy Policy
  • Social Media Policy
  • Travel Policy
Club Presidents have been sent a more detailed message outlining the policy expectations.  If you’re a Club President and did not receive the detailed bulletin, please contact Sam Thoms or Ken Radford
