A Letter from Cory Beatt, Technical Director

Swim BC Members, I am in my second week as the Swim BC Technical Director and have been working with our dedicated Swim BC Staff in fully understanding the Swim BC Technical program over the past number of years. I will be continuing to dive deeply into all aspects of the program to ensure that we develop the greatest opportunities for our membership. I am proud to be working with Swim BC and our partners to grow swimming, the greatest sport. I have had many moments in swimming to recognized how special it is. We swim for safety, for opportunity, and for the pursuit of becoming a better self. Swimming is inclusive and swimming is for life. In British Columbia we are rich in resources. We have beautiful facilities, great partners, and amazing coaches, who I consider to be the best in the country. I look forward to working with our community to innovate and engage. In the coming weeks and months I will be rolling out information on the 2020-21 Swim BC Technical Program. I look forward to supporting you and seeing you on the pool deck. In Swimming, Cory Beatt Technical Director, Swim BC

Coach Registration Guide

Swim BC has developed a step-by-step guide for coaches to help them through the registration process. This guide is a very useful tool to ensure all the registration steps are completed and to simplify the steps as best we can. You can download the PDF of the guide here or visit our How to become a coach page.

2021 Registration Manual Update

There have been some changes to the 2020-2021 Registration Manual that was circulated at the beginning of the month. First, Swimming Canada has changed the name of the Non-Competitive Category, it is now called Pre-Competitive. The Registration Manual has been updated to reflect this change and can be downloaded below. The RTR system will also be updated for the new season to reflect the new name. Second, there is a more detailed explanation on how to sign the Acknowledgement & Assumption fo Risk Forms in the RTR system. The RTR will be the only method to sign the forms this coming fall, which will allow Club Registrar’s to keep track of who has signed the forms. If you are developing your registration procedures for parents/guardians in the fall, this is an important update.

2020-2021 Registration Manual (Updated July 28th, 2020)

A quick note for Club Registrars, the annual RTR shutdown will begin on August 24th. If you have anything to do in the system, make sure to have it done before that date. You will be able to access the system again once your Club completes the Club Registration process. Swim BC will have access to the system again on September 1st and will start activating accounts for registered Clubs at that time.

Important Open Water Guidelines Update

Important Open Water Guidelines Update

Swimming Canada has removed the document titled “OPEN WATER SAFETY GUIDELINES – Coaching a training group” from their website. Swim BC has developed a replacement document to serve as a resource for your Club’s open water training activity. The document can be downloaded here.

Swim BC Insurance Interpretation – Lifeguards

If your club is pursuing open water training, please take note of the following information regarding insurance coverage for lifeguards:
  • Certified lifeguards who are volunteering their services for your club are covered under Swim BC insurance.
  • Certified lifeguards who are employees* of your club are covered under Swim BC insurance.
  • Certified lifeguards who are sub-contractors or self-employed must provide proof of their own insurance.
*An employee is defined as an individual receiving payment where source deductions (tax, EI, CPP) are made. If the lifeguard receives a lump-sum stipend or other payment without source deductions, they are considered self-employed for the purposes of this insurance interpretation.
