2018 Tier I Summer Championships - Day 2 Recap

Swimmers at the 2018 Swim BC Tier I Summer Championships continued to make great strokes on Saturday in Kelowna. Events for the day included the 200m IM, 400m FR, 200m FR relay, 100m BR, and 100m FR. 


Madisen Jacques (HYACK) continued her record breaking spree, this time in the 200m IM. In heats, Jacques hit the wall in a 2:22.38, 0.39 seconds under the 10 year old record set by Charlotte Philpotts in 2008. She went on to further drop that time down to a 2:21.34 in finals. 


Highlights from the day include the 11-12 Girls 400m FR, 10 and under Girls 200m IM, 12-13 Boys 100m BR, and 11 and under Boys 100m FR. The Girls 11-12 400m FR saw 22 out of 24 girls swim to best times - way to go girls! Jordan Vertue (PGB) charged to a decisive victory in a time of 4:40.63. Emma Evans (SPART) and Angel Yao (WSC) were neck and neck for a majority of the race. Evans pulled ahead for the middle 200m, but Yao came back strong on the last 50 meters. Evans managed to snag the touch in a time of 4:50.93 for the silver, just out-touching bronze medallist Yao’s 4:51.01. The Girls 10 and under 200m IM showcased some tough racing amongst the 10 and unders. Kelly Qi (PSW) won the gold medal in a 2:42.34. Briana Chiu (VPSC) followed hot on her heels in a 2:43.21, and Riley Andrusak (ISC) rounded out the podium in a 2:43.85. The Boys 12-13 100m BR also exhibited great racing, with the top five boys all finishing within two seconds of each other. Hao Sheng (Sunny) Zhang (HYACK) crushed his entry time by over seven seconds to claim the gold medal in a 1:12.09. Nathan Wong (GATOR) followed just 0.13 seconds behind to nab the silver in a 1:12.22, and Kristofer Hulten (ISC) hit the wall in a 1:13.54 to earn the final medal position. The top 14 swimmers in the Boys 11 and under 100m FR all went best times. Matthew Wang (PSW) topped the podium in a 1:00.83. Nolan Crisp (UVPCS) followed closely behind in a 1:01.38 to win the silver, and third place finisher Paul Orogo (HYACK) hit the wall in 1:02.77.
