HYACK wins the Team Title at the 2018 Summer Tier I Champs

The 2018 Swim BC Tier I Summer Championships closed out on Sunday afternoon following 3 days of fast racing from some of BC’s youngest and fastest swimmers. In team scores, Hyack Swim Club of New Westminster took the team championships with a comfortable margin of 243 points over South Surrey’s Pacific Sea Wolves. PSW won the Winter edition of this meet back in March while Hyack was the second place team. VPSC rounded out the top three.

Events for the final session included the mixed 200m Medley relay, 200m BK, 50 m FR, 200m FL, and mixed 200m FR relay.

Madisen Jacques (HYACK) set the final record of the weekend in the 11-12 Girls 200m FL. Her time of 2:21.56 cut 1.35 seconds off the previous record set just last year. That makes four records this weekend for Jacques, following her 400m IM and 100m FL records on Friday and her 200m IM record on Saturday.

Highlights from the session include the 10 and under Girls 200m BK, 11-12 Girls 50m FR, 11 and under Boys 50m FR, and the 12-13 Boys 200m FL. The 10 and under Girls 200m BK showcased great racing, with the top three girls finishing within less than two seconds of each other. Riley Andrusak (ISC) took home the gold medal in a time of 2:45.18 thanks to her strong last 50 meter split. Briana Chiu (VPSC) came out of the earlier heats and dropped 21.13 seconds from her entry time to earn the silver medal in a time of 2:46.34. Kelly Qi (PSW) rounded out the podium in a 2:46.94. The 11-12 Girls 50m FR saw the top eleven girls break the 30 second barrier and the top thirteen girls go personal best times. Jacques took the gold medal in a 27.15, just 0.06 seconds off of breaking yet another provincial record. Abigail Jerome (KWIC) charged to a 27.93 for silver. The race for bronze was close between three swimmers, with the 3rd to 5th place finishers finishing within 0.14 seconds of each other. Jenna Blythe (CHENA) came out on top in a 28.54 to snag the final podium position. The top 21 boys in the 11 and under Boys 50m FR all went personal bests, and the top seven broke the 30 second barrier. Matthew Wang (PSW) claimed the gold medal in a 28.16. Nolan Crisp (UVPCS) and Paul Orogo (HYACK) were neck and neck in a tight race for the silver medal. Crisp came out on top in a 28.64, beating Orogo’s 28.65 by 0.01 seconds. The 12-13 Boys 200m FL was one of the best events for best times this weekend, with 34 out of 35 swimmers going best times. Justin Yeom (PSW) had a decisive victory in a 2:13.30. Jadyn Johnston (WLBF) earned the silver in a 2:19.06 and Jean-Paul Low (WDSC) picked up the final medal in a 2:23.95.
