The 2018 BC Summer Games, hosted by the Duncan Stingrays, kicked off on Friday morning at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre. Events included the 400m IM, 100m BR para multi-class, 100m BR special Olympics (SO), 50m FR, 100m BR, 200m FR relay para multi-class, 200m BK, 200m FR Relay SO, 200m BK, 200m FL, 200m FR, 50m BK para multi-class, 100m BK para multi-class, 100m BK SO, 100m IM SO, and 200m IM para multi-class.
Highlights from the day included the Mixed 100m BR para multi-class, Girls 100m BK SO, Boys 200m BK, and Girls 200m FL. In the Mixed 100m BR para multi-class, Nicole Fast (SB9) (Zone 6) took the gold medal with a time of 1:30.88. Hannah Trimble (SB8) (Zone 8) broke the 2:00 barrier by 0.01 seconds to claim the silver, and Callum Robertson (SB7) (Zone 6) took the bronze in a 2:42.16. In the Girls 100m BK SO, the race for gold came down to the touch. Kayla Willms (Zone 4) touched in 1:47.96, just 0.01 seconds ahead of Clara Kodweiss (Zone 6) who hit the wall in a 1:47.97. Shayn Blandin (Zone 6) rounded out the podium with a 2:05.25. The top three boys in the Boys 200m BK all finished within less than a second of each other. Jadyn Johnston (Zone 8) came out on top in a time of 2:17.05. Just behind him was Jordan Luis (Zone 5) for the silver in a 2:17.49 and Pierson Piche (Zone 2) for bronze in a 2:17.97. The Girls 200m FL showcase a tight race for gold between Zone 6 teammates. Mary Paridaen van Vean (Zone 6) hit the wall first in a time of 2:28.62. Sydney Meldrum (Zone 6) followed just 0.02 seconds behind her to touch in a 2:28.64 for the silver. Jordan Vertue (Zone 8) claimed the final medal position with a time of 2:29.60.
