Emily Overholt of WVOSC broke the BC 15-17 girls 400 IM record swimming 4:45.86 at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival last week in Sydney. The existing record of 4:48.10 was set by Cheryl Gibson, CDSC thirty-six years ago winning a silver medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.
That still leaves us with one individual record from 1976, Shannon Smith’s 4:14.60 400 Freestyle for 13-14 girls.
Overholt was part of the Canadian Youth team racing at the A.Y.O.F. She was joined at the competition by two other BC athletes, Peter Brothers, Island Swimming and James Dergousoff, CHENA. Janusz Kaczmerek WVOSC and Vince Mikuska Provincial Coach were part of the coaching staff.
The Canadian Junior Development team training and competition tour in Australia had Luke Reilly UBCD and Stefanie Schmidt Island as part of the squad. Reilly won three silver and Schmidt one gold at the New South Wales Age Group Championship meet.
